Virginia Lawyers Weekly Empowering Women Award.
Howell & Rowlett PLLC is proud to announce that the firm has been chosen by Virginia Lawyers Weekly as one of a select number of recipients of VLW’s inaugural Empowering Women awards.
VLW issued the list of recipients of the first-ever Empowering Women awards on Marcj 18, 2024. According to VLW’s announcement, its new Empowering Women awards “recognize law firms that have shown a strong commitment to supporting and elevating women attorneys in Virginia”, adding that “Empowering Women is designed to showcase tangible and innovative efforts by law firms to advance women attorneys in the workplace and community.”
Firms selected for the award were found to demonstrated a commitment to empowering women by:
* Having a track record of recruiting, hiring and promoting women; in their organization.
* Offering a mentoring program for women.
* Working toward systemic change in society to combat inequality.
* Promoting women into firm leadership.
* Contributing to advancing the cause of women through outside philanthropic or community endeavors.
Howell & Rowlett PLLC is a six-attorney litigation boutique whose practice emphasizes insurance defense, insurance coverage, representation of attorneys in malpractice and ethics matters, and diversity and bias training. The firm consists of three women and three men, including name partners Jennifer Rowlett and Danny Howell. Jennifer Rowlett was recently made a name partner of the firm.
“The legal industry is one of the least diverse in America”, said Danny Howell. “As an advocate for the notion that empowering women in the private practice of law requires systemic change in firm management, structure and hiring,” Howell explained, “we take a non-traditional approach designed to facilitate diversity,” which includes the following:
* No restrictions on where or how much any attorney works. No billable hours requirement. Flexible schedules to accommodate individual needs.
* Recruiting from non-traditional sources more likely to have a diverse applicant pool.
* A commitment among all attorneys to support each other in meeting their responsibilities as primary caretakers of children, parents or other relatives.
The firm is actively involved in teaching and training in diversity and bias. Firm partner Danny Howell conducts a dozen or more continuing legal education courses in this area each year, as well as offering in-house diversity and bias training for law firms and businesses.
